Grocery Stores

ASDA
- allegedly owned by Wal-Mart which should become apparent to anyone shopping here by the obnoxious yellow happy faces and the enormous scale of store itself
- expect to spend 30 minutes finding your bearings the first time you shop here but after that you can find almost anything you could imagine and at pretty low prices
ALDI (Albrecht Discount)
- basically a german grocery outlet (discount grocery store). There are lots of good deals on obscurely branded goods. You can get household items and pet supplies here as well although their stock changes week to week
LIDL
- essentially a different version of the discount store ALDI, same type of random goods but the German’s might tell you this store is for those with fewer financial means
Costco
- just like back home, but you need a car or a couple friends to go in on a cab with you. Can be reached by bus/train (but how would you get all of your goodies home?)
- requires a Costco card to shop here - but you can use your American/Canadian one no problem
Morrisons
- Offer a wide variety of items, you can get refried beans and canned pumpkin (usually only around the holidays)
- this used to be “Safeway/Vons” up until recent years and the resemblance is still there - albeit on a much smaller scale than most of us are used to
- the big Morrisons at Anniesland cross will become a familiar landmark for you as it is the biggest grocery store nearest the Vet School - they offer a cafe and lots of selection but beware shopping during granny hour - lots of elderly folk around and difficult to manoeuvre your shopping cart to be sure
Tesco
- These are everywhere and offer a limited selection of grocery items, prices are comparable to the other cheaper stores (though certain things can be outrageously expensive - don’t buy eggs at Tesco Metro)
- there is a giant Tesco Extra in Maryhill that has the same items as a Walmart/Target-type store and often has lower prices than its Tesco Metro counterparts
Sainsbury's- a more upscale grocery, but not so much as the next two
Waitrose- upscale grocery on the top of Byres Road
Marks and Spencers
- again expensive but you can find delicious splurge items
- everything is branded M&S which can actually be a good thing for bringing the price to a more reasonable level - the quality is not so bad either!
Iceland/Farm foods
- cheap student option near the main University (Byres Road), good for frozen stuff
Speciality Grocery Stores
- Polish Markets
- Asian (Chinese) Groceries
  - See Woo superstore
  - Cung Ying cash and carry
- Halaal Markets
Online
- If you are too lazy to get off your butt and physically go to the grocery/don't want to carry cases of liquor or a frozen turkey.
- Almost all of the above stores have Click and Collect options which you can pick up or have delivered for a few quid.
