Acquisitions Exercise

Our group acted as the ‘local authority museum’. The object we accepted was Jug 1. The jug fits into our collection as we focus on Glasgow, specifically the industrial history in Glasgow. The jug’s clear depiction of Kelvingrove and a scene from the Glasgow International exhibition fits with our current collections. It is small enough to be added to our storage even though we are tight on space. The object was in well enough condition and so conservation will not be as expensive. The issue with this object is that provenance is difficult to trace even with the donation information from the Hunterian Catalogue. The local collector is offering the piece, although there needs to be more investigation as to tracing the ownership of the object before we can accept the acquisition. Furthermore, additional research will be needed to determine the historical context and significance of the Britannia Pottery Co. in Glasgow. The rarity of the object must also be further researched in order to determine a value for the object, which would influence the type of insurance might be needed for the object.
